Retinal disorders, optic atrophy, and lesions of the higher visual pathways are the main anatomical causes of visual loss in children. WHO reports that, 65% people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide: 82% are blind are over 50 years old and 25% have low vision. Globally, uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of moderate and severe visual impairment; cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in middle- and low-income countries. Around 50,000 Americans go blind every year, most are from treatable or preventable eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Yet half of the 61 million Americans are in the risk of losing their eyesight saw an eye doctor in the past 12 months.
